Nafi Thiam claims European bronze

In the Swiss town of Zürich, Belgium’s European Junior champion Nafi Thiam delivered an impressive heptathlon performance to claim bronze at the European Athletics Championships.

Thiam kicked off her heptathlon campaign in a decent manner, clocking 14.05 in the 100m hurdles, 24/100 shy of her PB. The 2nd event of the day took her from 18th to 2nd on the overall ranking as she cleared 1m97 in the high jump, a stunning personal best by 4 centimeters equalling the best ever height achieved in a heptathlon high jump.

She then managed the shot put well with a solid put of 14m29 and finished off the first day of competition with another solid 25.19, bringing her in the overnight lead by just 10 points with three events to come on day two.

On day 2 she had a best jump of 6m19 in the long jump ensuring her ranking at the front of the field. In the javelin, Nafi hurled the spear 49m69. Despite not being the fastest 800m runner, the Geography student ran at her own pace managing a personal best by running 2:20.79 to retain third position in the overall ranking with another solid tally of 6423 points. This bronze medal is her first accolade at the senior level.

France’s Antoinette Djimou took the gold, collecting 6,551 points with dutchwoman Nadine Broersen claiming the silver (6,498).
