At the 2014 Sportsgala held at attraction park Plopsaland in De Panne, Belgium Nafissatou Thiam was named Female Athlete of the Year for 2014. Nafi was selected as winner in balloting of the professional members of sportspress, the national league of sports journalists in Belgium.
Thiam had a breakthrough year in the senior ranks, highlighted by her bronze medal in the heptathlon at the European Championships in Zürich and her 5th place at the Hypomeeting in Götzis, Austria in May where she set a national senior record score of 6508 points. Earlier this year, she qualified for the high jump final at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in the Polish town of Sopot.
Thiam who just last year won the Rising Star o/t Year Award received the award from Kim Clijsters, is the successor of tennis player Kirsten Flipkens.
